Fig. 5: This tooth has a vertical root fracture. These teeth are not usually worth saving. Vertical root fractures are usually caused by dental procedures like root canal treatment and post placement. Unfortunately, the dental procedures needed to save teeth also put certain stresses on them. Root canal treatment is needed to clean the inner part of the tooth to prevent or cure existing infection. Occasionally the forces needed to complete root canal therapy can overwhelm the root tip structure causing a small crack to form. Some treatment options may exist and should be discussed with your dentist or specialist.
